Galaxy S22 Ultra, Note is Back... But do you like it?

Are you going to buy Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra? This is any information!

The Galaxy Note wearing the mask of the Galaxy S is back. It preserves the characteristics of the existing Note series, but adds a powerful camera function unique to the Galaxy S Ultra series to capture the fun of writing, photographing, and drawing in one product.

It's clear that it's a good cell phone, and if you want these features, buy them. However, it was only after reading this article well.

The latest S22 Ultra model!

It is the 2022 model and the 13th ultra model of the Galaxy S series, Samsung Electronics' Android flagship smartphone series, which is released in the first half of every year. The official release name was named Galaxy S22 Ultra in time for 2022 when it was released. The series code is named Rainbow and the device code is named b0q/b0s.

After releasing the Galaxy Z series, a foldable smartphone product line, Samsung Electronics made a plan to simplify its smartphone lineup. Accordingly, the Galaxy Note series product line will be incorporated into the Galaxy S series. The brand itself of the Galaxy Note disappears, but the functions only existing Galaxy Note will be installed in the top model of the Galaxy S series. The Galaxy S22 Ultra is actually a spiritual sequel to the Galaxy Note series.

The design is firm and the grip is soft

The 'Ultra' model is the only one that inherited the characteristics of the Galaxy Note in the Galaxy S22 series. The overall design is based on the previous work, Galaxy S21, and is designed to refine the existing design. Its basic colors are green, pink gold, phantom white, and phantom black in total. Until now, Samsung Electronics has emphasized soft design in Galaxy S series. However, the S22 Ultra is different. It adopted a "square" corner alone, as if reproducing the nostalgia of the Galaxy Note series.

Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra compare with Galaxy S22

However, contrary to the visible impression, the Ultra was softer than the Galaxy S22 Plus. This is because, unlike angled corners, the sides are more rounded than the sibling models. Thanks to this, it feels thinner and softer than you think when you hold it in your hand, but if you like the cold and hard feeling of aluminum, it may be a bit disappointing.

The screen size of the Ultra model is 6.8, the largest among the Galaxy S22 series, and the same as the previous one. The battery capacity is also the same as the previous model with 5,000 mAh, but this model is equipped with a function that automatically adjusts the screen scanning rate from at least 1 Hz to at most 120 Hz, which is ahead of the previous model.

In addition, Ultra is the first Samsung smartphone to support 45 W high-speed charging (previously up to 25 W). However, according to the recent 'eco-friendly' trend of smartphone manufacturers, basic packages do not include chargers. In the end, it costs an additional $35 to purchase an adapter, which is not good for ordinary consumers because it feels like spending money twice. Instead, the effect is certain. When using a 45 W charger, it takes only about an hour and a half to fully charge the Ultra-model.

A long explanation of its specifications

Nytography

Nightography refers to technologies for improving photographic quality in a low-light environment.

When taking a picture, images are continuously taken through multi-frame processing to synthesize and make the rest of the pictures except for the pictures in question. On top of that, the color and detail are improved by recognizing objects in the picture through AI-based algorithms.

Video = Samsung Youtube

When filming a video, an optimal correction value is found through stabilization of a dual track image per frame by using OIS and VDIS at the same time. Here, a variable frame is applied according to a minute change in ambient light to increase and decrease the camera exposure value. In particular, when the image frame falls below 24 fps, high-quality frames are found and up to 12 frames are synthesized. It is possible to correct distortion and take bright, clear, and soft images at low illumination.

The S Pen is faster, and the core function remains the same

As the DNA of the Galaxy Note was transplanted into the Galaxy S22 Ultra, the "embedded S Pen" was also revived. Existing Note series users are the most welcome factor. It is evaluated that the new S Pen has improved enough to feel the writing sense by applying improved hardware and AI handwriting prediction algorithms. Existing convenience functions such as "fast memo" that allows you to take notes immediately when you take out a pen even on the off screen, capture and translation using S Pen remain. Unfortunately, even though there was a hiatus for the release of new products for more than a year, there was no innovative new function that caught the eye.

However, S Pen is still an element that gives 'specialized' identity that cannot be seen on other smartphones. For users who have enjoyed using S Pen's unique analog sensibility and convenience functions, this model is also expected to present a sufficiently satisfactory experience.

Camera performance. Now, AI will decide the winner

In fact, the camera stands out more than the S Pen in this product. Samsung Electronics emphasized the performance of top-notch cameras as a differentiator in previous Galaxy S ultra-class products, and this strategy has not changed in this product, which embraces Galaxy Note. However, it is AI that distinguishes between the previous and new products in this series. Although the superficial hardware specifications are not much different from before, the overall photo quality produces better results by increasing the combination of AI processors and cameras that are more than twice as fast.

One of the functions that visually confirm the performance difference of AI cameras is the portrait mode. The portrait mode, which emphasizes the subject and makes the background blurry, is a function widely used by ordinary users as it is easy to give a luxurious feeling to the picture.

Photos taken with the Galaxy S21 Ultra under the same conditions are crushed because some areas from the edge cannot be separated from the background. On the other hand, it is confirmed that the S22 Ultra reduces the crushing phenomenon inside and outside the subject and captures the texture more elaborately. Samsung Electronics explained that the addition of the "AI Stereo Depth Map" function and deep learning-based soft focus effect on the Galaxy S22 Ultra enables more natural and clear portrait photography than the previous one.

Comparison of night photography performance.
Comparison of night photography performance

Samsung Electronics emphasized that the performance of night shooting was particularly improved in this product, and as a result of filming in a low-light environment, it was confirmed that there were definitely improvements from the previous one. First of all, in the above picture, the person picture taken with the Galaxy S22 Ultra is brighter and the color is closer to the truth than the S21 Ultra film.

The fun of filming, editing ↑

In addition, the Galaxy S22 Ultra has added filming and editing functions that can be used in daily life. Among them, Auto Framing is a function that recognizes people who have approached within a 5m radius of camera shooting and automatically focuses on the center of the screen. The shaking that occurs when the user moves directly or manually pulls the zoom can be minimized, and the result is natural. Look at the GIF image below. It is a video taken with auto-framing in place without movement. It can be seen that AI recognizes changes in the entry and movement of subjects and automatically adjusts the zoom.

Surprisingly, "AI Eraser" which was well-received in its previous work, can now erase not only objects but also shadows and light reflections. As a result of testing the shadow removal function during the week, most of the shadows of the building covering the rides were removed. However, whether it is still in the early stages, the criteria for recognizing shadows by photo and the level of removal were all different. Like the existing AI eraser function, in some cases, it may produce results that exceed expectations, but most of them can be used as fun elements.

Application of eco-friendly materials

In accordance with Samsung Electronics' eco-friendly policy, Galaxy for the Planet, eco-friendly materials are applied. A recycled material containing about 20% of a waste fishing net material was applied to a key bracket serving as an inner support for the volume/side (power) button. Post-consumer materials, i.e., materials that recycled waste after consumers used the product and became no longer usable, were applied inside speaker modules and power and volume keys. 100% recycled paper was applied to box packaging and packaging materials. Eco-friendly materials certified by UL, an international safety certification body such as PCM and bio-based materials, were applied to all cover cases.

Rather negative controversies

Let's talk about the controversy and problems that are circulating among netizens.

MicroSDXC slot not supported

Following the previous Galaxy S6, Galaxy S10 5G, and Galaxy S21 series, the Galaxy S22 series has the same controversy as the previous one that does not support SD card slots. Considering that Samsung Electronics is working with Microsoft in many ways, and that there is a cloud service, and that it has not supported SD slots from the beginning, as well as Google Pixel, which has pure Android, is gradually losing SD card slots.

Weak vibration motor

Many say that it is regrettable that the vibration intensity of the X-axis linear motor mounted on it is weak.

The vibration motor in the S22 series is one of AAC's lineups, but it turns out that the reason for the weak feedback vibration was the adoption of the cheapest model with the lowest performance among them, which was also the result of cost reduction.

In fact, Samsung Electronics gave feedback on whether there were many complaints about weak vibrations in software updates. However, the feedback is only the addition of a function of outputting vibration sound with a phone vibration speaker when vibration occurs, and netizens are responding that Samsung Electronics' move is absurd.

Flickering phenomenon

Flickering was observed when photographing the screen of the Galaxy S22 series with the cameras of some reviewers. The flickering phenomenon of the flickering image is often shown on the camera because the camera matches the scanning rate of the phone, but when the user feels the phenomenon seen on the camera with his or her eyes, it affects vision loss and eye fatigue. Therefore, in general, when making gaming monitors, flicker-free products or products are made so that flickering is not found.

It is not a visible problem simply because it was photographed by a camera, but a phenomenon in which flickering is visible when using a low scanning rate such as 48Hz after receiving the device, and when using the device under brightness or at low brightness has been reported. However, there is a prediction that it can be improved in the future due to software problems.

A blinking phenomenon was raised. Some believe that there is a problem with the Exynos 2200, but like in Korea, visibility flickering occurs when the keyboard is turned on in Snapdragon-mounted models. Samsung has scheduled an update due to software problems.

Poor heat dissipation design

Compared to other devices equipped with the same AP, the heat dissipation design is poor, which significantly lowers its sustainability.

In the 2020s, as Android camp flagship APs became relatively stagnant in terms of their heyday ratio, there was a situation in which they relied on process refinement and power limitation rather than architectural improvement. In the end, performance improvement in this way inevitably leads to a higher calorific value than the previous generation, and even if the maximum performance is increased, sufficient thermal control and heat dissipation design are not supported.

Samsung Electronics, which uses Android-based APs, was no exception, so to make up for this, it would have to improve the device's heat dissipation design and tsotling algorithm to weaken the frequency and strength of tsotling, but it turned out that investment was not made properly.

In fact, if you look at the exploded photos of the device, the area of the steam chamber is so narrow that you can't tell if it's a heat pipe or a steam chamber. The steam chamber of the Xiaomi 12 and the steam chamber of the S22 are incomparable, with the same AP and more than twice the performance maintenance power. Samsung Electronics also pointed out that a separate heat sink was needed internally, but it seems that it ignored this and pushed ahead with the release without mounting it.

In terms of software, it did not create a scheduler that manages trottling well, but shoveled the significance of the top AP installation through GOS, which greatly limits initial performance at all.

As a result, the S22 series shows significantly lower sustainability than other devices of competitors equipped with the same AP. The Xiaomi 12 based on the WildLife Extreme Stress Test showed 93.8%, while the S22 series showed a significantly lower performance retention of 40%, and the S22+ showed the same temperature as the S22 general model without a steam chamber, and only a difference of 4-5% in performance retention.

As of March 10, the initial performance limit of GOS of the S22 series was lifted, but the performance limit was somewhat lifted without any fundamental improvement in terms of heat generation management, so the poor heat dissipation design showed poor game performance.

Poor performance due to forced application of GOS

Samsung Electronics was allowed to select 'performance priority mode' through a software update on March 10. However, this mode does not completely turn off GOS, but merely relaxes some of the policies that limit the clock from the start. Still, the option to turn off GOS completely is not provided. The detour to turn off GOS with a third-party app has been restored, but since it is not officially provided, it is suspected that it will refuse free repairs in the event of future problems.# In common sense, if there is really no problem, it is okay to provide an option to officially turn off the detour path, not 'recovery of detour path'.

However, it has been reported that heat generation is felt when performance-first mode is selected or GOS is completely turned off through a bypass route.

Unable to save 10-bit HDR photos

Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, an AP mounted on the Galaxy S22 series, supports 10-bit HEIF storage. # Photography as well as video supports optical color gamut and HDR.

However, in the pure camera app immediately after its release, if it is saved as HEIF, it will only be saved as an 8-bit SDR. When storing HEIFs, it appears that the image is encoded with an H.265 codec and a Main10 profile that supports up to 10 bits of color depth is written. The color depth is 8 bits, and the color space and transmission function are sRGB.

Charging speed

When the screen is turned on during charging, there is a problem that a charging speed of about 6W is generated regardless of the remaining battery capacity.[10] It is strange to see that rival products go from 20W to 25W when the screen is turned on. In addition, experiments have shown that there is no difference in charging speeds between 25w and 45w, and it appears to limit charging speeds not only in the #S22 series but also in other devices.

However, there are devices that are normally charged, so it seems that we need to wait and see.

Edge curvature increase

Compared to the previous Galaxy S21 Ultra, the curvature of the edge has increased, highlighting the disadvantages of the edge display. In particular, since it is a phone that uses an S pen, it comes as a quite big disadvantage. For your information, this problem has occurred in all note series using edge displays.

My opinion

Overall, it was worth saying that it was a "complete" that harmonized the advantages of the Galaxy S and Galaxy Note series well. It provided a highly impeccable level of experience in performance, convenience, and camera variety. Instead, one regrettable thing is that the S Pen is still designed to be used only in the most expensive model. Until Samsung succeeded in the box office of foldable phones, the S Pen was the biggest differentiator between the S series and the Note series. However, now that Galaxy S and Galaxy Note are integrated, it may be evaluated that it is excessive division of the S Pen as the exclusive property of the top model.

And unclear answers to various ongoing controversies may be a problem. Questions about GOS and performance, complaints about machine heating, and other problems caused by cost reduction are all problems that Samsung Electronics should solve.

Ultra models can be fully valued by differentiating large screens and camera performance in the future. It remains to be seen whether Samsung will maintain its S-Note integration strategy next year, but at least in the next series, why don't we emphasize the differentiation from other brands in an attempt to incorporate the S-Pen into all models of the S-Pen?
